The History of Head Massage (Champi)
Head massage with oil is part of daily life across the Indian subcontinent and has roots in Ayurveda, where oiling the head (shiro abhyanga) is described as part of a healthy routine. Generations of families have practised champi at home.
In the 1970s, therapist Narendra Mehta introduced 'Indian head massage' to the UK, adapting the family tradition into a seated spa treatment that is now offered worldwide.
