The History of Trigger Point Therapy
The idea of tender 'knots' in muscles was described by physicians in the 19th century, but trigger point therapy is most closely linked to American physician Dr Janet Travell.
From the 1940s onward, Travell mapped common trigger points and their patterns of referred pain. Her two-volume manual with Dr David Simons, first published in 1983, remains a key reference for therapists.
