Dry Cupping vs Hijama: What's the Difference?
Cupping is popular across Pakistan, but dry cupping and hijama (wet cupping) are very different. Learn how each works and which one a spa offers.

Cupping is one of the oldest therapies in the world, described in ancient Egyptian, Chinese and Greek writings and practised widely across the Islamic world. Today you will hear two terms in Pakistan: dry cupping and hijama.
What is dry cupping?
Dry cupping places glass or silicone cups on the skin and creates gentle suction. The cups lift the skin and underlying tissue. They may stay still for a few minutes or glide across oiled skin. There are no cuts or needles. At a spa, dry cupping is usually combined with massage on the back and shoulders.
What is hijama?
Hijama is wet cupping. After suction, the practitioner makes small superficial cuts and uses the cups again to draw out a small amount of blood. Because it breaks the skin, it should only be performed by trained, qualified practitioners in a clinical setting with strict sterile procedures.
Which one does Belvie Spa offer?
We offer dry cupping massage only. It is a non-invasive wellness treatment. We do not perform hijama.
What to expect from dry cupping
- A tight, pulling sensation – usually not painful.
- Circular marks that typically fade within a few days to a week.
- A loose, relaxed feeling in the back and shoulders afterwards.
Who should avoid cupping?
Avoid cupping if you take blood thinners, have a bleeding disorder, fragile or sunburned skin, or are pregnant.
