The History of Shiatsu Massage
Shiatsu developed in Japan from traditional 'anma' massage, which itself was influenced by Chinese medicine. In the early 20th century, practitioner Tamai Tempaku combined anma with Western anatomy and coined the term shiatsu.
Tokujiro Namikoshi founded the Japan Shiatsu College in 1940, and Japan's government officially recognised shiatsu as a distinct therapy in 1964. It has since spread around the world.
