The History of Assisted Stretching Therapy
Partner-assisted stretching has roots in traditions such as Thai massage and yoga. In the 1940s and 1950s, physiotherapists Herman Kabat, Margaret Knott and Dorothy Voss developed PNF (proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation), a contract-and-relax stretching method used in rehabilitation.
Assisted stretching has since moved from clinics and sports teams into gyms and spas as more people look to improve everyday mobility.
